Microscopic Actions with Macroscopic Outcomes

We’re all aware that the global elite are said to have incredible daily rituals. The Rock and Mark Wahlberg are both said to wake up at 3AM and exercise twice daily. David Goggins can run a marathon backwards, using only his eyelashes. Incredible. Everyone might not aspire to achieve such levels of success, but the common dilemma that we all face is “How do I get from here to there? From A to B?” It’s important to remember that we’ve all achieved a goal that we’ve set in the past. We are currently living out lives that we only imagined previously. This being the case, we still struggle to conquer our current obstacles. Take a breath. Reflect on your past successes. How did you start?

Micro. We understand this word to mean “small”. When goals are set, consciously or unconsciously, we break those goals down into “small” steps. Often we don’t break our goals down into small enough steps. This is why our goals can feel so daunting. It’s difficult to continue pursuing a goal when we’re told it requires a minimum of 2 hours a day outside of the regular work week. We’re made to believe we are failures if we don’t spend every waking moment outside of work pursuing a passion. What’s worked for me on difficult days is this. Instead of committing to a 2 hour workout, I say, “I’m going to stretch or do yoga”. 15 minutes. Maybe the ball gets rolling and I do some more after the stretch. Regardless, I pat myself on the back and count that day as a huge W (win).

I refer to this aforementioned relentless pursuit effort as “The Goggin’s Mindset”, and it is awesome when you’re ready for it. When you’re motivated and have the capacity to crush a 2 hour workout - absolutely let’s get it. However, you might only have 3 or 4 of those days per week. When I’m sore from several days of hard work, tired from lack of sleep, and my body NEEDS to recover - I put my energy on other goals that don’t require much physical exertion. What keeps me driven is believing that the 15 minutes of stretching I can put in on a rough day is good enough. We have to stop being so self deprecating and critical. You’re a success for getting out of bed and continuing to be a functioning member of society. Even if you give yourself 5 minutes a day to commit towards improving yourself, that’s a win. Even if it was 1 minute. Give yourself a moment each day. One moment to change your mindset, and to realign yourself so you can head in the direction that you actually want to go. Set that intention for yourself every day, and rest assured the outcome will be massive.
